Joyce Tilley Nagel, born in Buffalo, New York, received a BS in advertising design from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MA in printmaking from Wayne State University.

She has worked as a free lance graphic designer and is known for her enthusiastic, knowledgeable yet sensitive approach to teaching drawing, printmaking, and landscape painting. She has demonstrated her underpainting technique on the steps at Notre Dame Cathedral, the garden at Giverny, the square in Rouen, a street of La Coste, France, and in Nairobi, Kenya

Awards have been given to Joyce's pastels by the Degas Pastel Society, the Kansas Pastel Society, the Maryland Pastel Society, the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Pastel Society of America. She received a Gold Addy for illustration from the Savannah Art Directors.Her work is in Northwestern Hospital, United Airlines in Chicago, Melhado Flynn Association, Anchor Bank in SC, Wachovia Bank and Compass Group in NC, and in private collections.
