Don was born in Pittsburgh, PA. He received a BS in advertising
design from the Rochester Institute of Technology and an MA in printmaking from
Wayne State University. He worked in Detroit ad agencies for over 30 years,
where he was the head art director and group supervisor on Pontiac, Mr.
Goodwrench, Budd and Dow Agricultural.
He has received
several awards from local and national art directors clubs, including the New
York Art Directors Club and a Cleo award for television.
Don and his wife, Joyce, moved to Hilton Head, North Carolina, in 1986, where he worked as a
freelance graphic designer until his retirement in 1998. He began pastel painting shortly after his retirement; his paintings now hang in private and corporate collections and he has
received awards from regional and national pastel societies.
Joyce and
Don have made several group painting trips to France and Italy. They have
teamed up to give exciting duo workshops, demonstrating their own methods
of working. The students learn a variety of techniques to help them gain
insight and develop their own style of pastel painting. Don also teaches art
the Art Academy of Hilton Head.
